What is Chiropractic

The Philosophy

The philosophy is based on two main premise 1) the body is self-healing and self-regulating and 2) the nervous system is the master control system of the body and if there is interference with this system the body can no longer heal and regulate itself as effectively causing pain, disease and dysfunction.

What is Chiropractic!

Chiropractic is a science, art, and Philosophy.

The science is the knowledge of the human body, its normal anatomy and function.

The art is the practice of a skill, the chiropractic adjustment.

The philosophy is how one combines this knowledge and skill to heal the human body.

How chiropractic works!

In order to understand how chiropractic works we must understand the role of the nervous system, the principle of homeostasis, or what chiropractors call innate (born with) intelligence, the skeletal system and how these interrelate.

The nervous system is the most important system of the body. It is the first system to develop embryologically. It consists of the brain, spinal cord and peripheral nerves. The nervous system controls, regulates and maintains every cell tissue and organ of the body and is responsible for the body being self-healing and self-regulating. This is called Homeostasis or innate intelligence. The body’s ability to maintain its internal environment within certain physiological limits or chemical balance necessary for life at the cellular level automatically. It is the life force or Chi that the Chinese speak of. This is controlled by bio-electrical signals (nerve impulses) that travel to and from the brain back and forth to the cells of the body to tell them what to do. A communication network that dwarfs the internet. If this communication is interfered with homeostasis is not maintained and the function of the body decreases causing decreased health.

The skeletal system which consists of the cranium, the vertebral column and the pelvis. The role of the skeletal system is to protect the brain and the spinal cord and to hold us upright and allow us to move. The cranium is a solid vault of bone protecting the brain the central command center the source of homeostasis, innate intelligence. But, the vertebral column, which protects the extension of the brain( the spinal cord) and peripheral nerves is segmented to allow for motion. There are twenty-four movable segments, with this segmentation the spine becomes more mechanical. Having more movable parts, just like any other machine, the Spine becomes more subject to break down, malfunction and wear and tear. So, trauma, slips, falls, car accidents, work injuries, sports, repetitive motion, prolonged sitting or standing, the birth process, basically stress over time and we are all subject to stress in the form of gravity.

The spine can and does stop functioning properly. It gets stuck or fixated and when this happens the delicate nerves that exit the spine get irritated, impinged or compressed. This causes interference between the communication of the brain and the cells of the body altering homeostasis decreasing health causing pain and decreased quality of life. Chiropractors call this condition Vertebral Subluxation and are the only doctors in the world who are trained to locate and remove this interference allowing the body to heal and self-regulate itself as it is designed to do.
