The lumbar vertebra are large segments located near the bottom of your spine. Although the largest of the vertebral column, the segments still move and contribute to the motion of the entire spine. There are 5 sections of the lumbar vertebra designated as L1 to L5. But, in this short lesson, we are going to focus on the basics of the L3 Vertebra and talk about how it can contribute to lower back pain.
Located in the center of the lumbar section, the third lumbar vertebra is very susceptible to getting a herniated disc. Although large and strong, the L3 is responsible for supporting most of the spine, while also being flexible enough to allow twisting, bending and movements associated with daily life. This combination of weight and movement generate great stress on the lumbar section and can lead to injuries, aches and pains. Left untreated these injuries can eventually lead to debilitating pain that can leave a person less mobile.
Beyond the support associated with the lumbar section of the spine, the L3 vertebra also houses the nervous system associated with the legs and reproductive systems of the body. In addition, chiropractors with clients experiencing problems with their ears, eyes, digestion, appetite and sleep will often look to the L3 – among other vertebra – in order to ease the problem and bring the body back into alignment.
If you are experiencing lower back pain or problems with any of the functions above, do not hesitate to call Cornerstone Chiropractic. Pain is our body calling to us for help. Answer that call and let us get you back to your daily life, pain free.
